Since the massive ice sheets melted, the land has been rising at a rate of approximately 8–9 millimeters per year, continuously transforming the scenery by creating new islands, peninsulas, and straits.
One of the most fascinating features of Kvarken is the De Geer moraines, which form elongated, pearl chain-like ridges on the seabed and along the coast. These moraines were formed around 10,000 years ago, when the glacier melted and its edge gradually retreated.
